What is the weather like today

 

The lesson in the 6th form with the use of IKT

Objectives

Educational:

- to master the lexical material “Seasons of the year. Months”

- to get familiar with the “Weather” vocabulary

- to improve language skills, listening

 

Upbringing:

- to understand the need of the foreign language practical knowledge

- to cultivate love towards nature

- to develop the sense of beautiful

- to increase the interest in learning a foreign language

 

Developing:

       - to develop the capacity for visual differentiation, involuntary memory, guessing of the meaning of words.

 

Equipment: the book “Challenges”, Power Point presentation,

teaching cards, students' creative projects, overhead projector, audio recording.

 

 

Procedure

І. Greeting (Teacher – Class activity).

ІІ. Warming Up

Teacher – Class activity

  1. Look at the window and answer my questions!

 -What Season is it now?

-What Is the weather like in winter? (summer ...?)

-What Season is the coldest?

-What Season is the hottest?

- What season brings the first flowers?

-What Season is "tasty"?

  2)   We often say "Everything is good in its season". Is it so? Let’s  try to prove it.

English proverbs

Teacher: English and Ukrainian sayings and proverbs about seasons and weather.

Guess and name the season, translate:

April showers (зливи) bring May flowers.

Its raining cats and dogs.

A snowy year is a rich year.

One swallow (ластівка) does not make a spring.

After rain comes fair (ясна) weather

IV. The main part of the lesson

  1. The use of language

 How do people respond to remarks about the weather. Choose the correct response from the right column.

a. The weather is awful.          1. Yes, it is lovely

b. It is beautiful today             2. Yes, it is wonderful!

c. It is fine today                      3. Yes, it is awful

d. it is a wonderful morning    4. Yes, it is awful.

e. it is terrible                          5. Yes, it is beautiful.

 

 Change the following sentences using the Model.

Model: When the sun shines we say that the weather is sunny.

B. when the temperature is-25c we say it is cold.

·        When it rains (rainy).

·        When it drizzles (nasty)

·        When a cold wind blows (windy)

·        When a fog is spreading (foggy)

·        When the frost is hard (frosty)

·        When it is warm (fine)

·        When the temperature is 25 above zero (hot)

·        When we have good weather at the beginning of September (Indian Summer)

  1. Listening

 Pre-Listening

At this stage the language difficulties of video perception are removed. Activation of familiar vocabulary (slides 2-9) and the introduction of new words (slides 10-20)

While-Listening

1 Jigsaw listening and viewing

The task is: Sit down in pairs sit back to back: one watching the screen, the other facing the back of the class.

2 Share the information: the watchers have to describe what is on the screen to their partner.

the listeners have to describe what do they hear to their partner.

3. Listening for more details

Watch the video for the second time asking students to improve on their description of the video

What is this? Who is that? What are they talking about?

After-Listening

1 What is the weather like today?

What kind of weather was described by the people?

Watch the conversation again to confirm what they have heard and then complete the rest of the conversation PPT (slides 21-23)

 

2 While working in pairs write down the words which are associated for you

with the weather they describe.

 

3 Character role-play

Watch the film and try to sound the person.

 

4 Sound the video. Uninterrupted  silent viewing.

Students read the completed conversation with a partner, and then role-play it in front of another group.

Join into the groups and sound the video.

 

3). Grammar activities

Teacher. Use the correct form of the verbs.

Simple Future / to be going to

1) It is very stuffy (душно). - It ...... (rain).

2) The weather is fine today. What will you do? - I do not know yet. I think we ... (go) to the zoo.

3) Do you know what weather will be like tomorrow? - Sure. It ... (be) windy and wet.

4) It is raining. - No problem. I ... (take) an umbrella.

5) There are dark clouds in the sky. - Yes, it ... (be) stormy.

6) It is frosty. Please, put on a warm sweater. -1 Will. I think it ... (be) very cold in the evening.

7) What will the weather be like tomorrow? - Look, the sky is starry (зоряне). It .... (be) sunny tomorrow.

 

Key: 1) is going to rain; 2) will go; 3) will be / is going to be; 4) will take; 5) is going to be; 6) will be; 7) is going to be

 

V.  The conclusion of the lesson.
